CancerCare Australia had its beginnings in 1990 as a community awareness program of the Rotary Club of East Gosford selling Bowelscan kits.

The program grew over the next twenty years to include 110 Rotary clubs and over 700 participating pharmacies across Greater Metropolitan Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, South East New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. The Rotary Club of East Gosford Bowelscan Program was restructured into a standalone charity in November 2011 named CancerCare Australia and the screening program was rebranded to BowelCare Australia.

CancerCare Australia is a not-for-profit community service that still provides a community awareness program and affordable annual bowel screening across Greater Metropolitan Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, South East New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

CancerCare Australia has expanded its focus to now support cancer related programs such as the Shirley Shuttle, Cancer Council Bus, Cancer Council Home Care and sponsors the Carols by Candlelight Mt Penang utilising the profits from the sale of the BowelCare kits.

The BowelCare  program has given for 30 years of service to the community.

Walter Leijten started the community awareness program of the Rotary Club of East Gosford selling Bowelscan kits in 1990 across Northern Metropolitan Sydney and the Central Coast.

Walter was very passionate about bowel cancer awareness and in the words of Professor Glenn Salkeld from the University of Sydney, "Waler was a true champion for public health, never wavering in his support of the bowel cancer screening program".

The program grew over the next twenty years to include 100 Rotary clubs and over 700 participating pharmacies across Greater Metropolitan Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, South East New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

The Bowelscan Program was restructured into a standalone charity in November 2011 named CancerCare Australia and the program was rebranded to BowelCare Australia.

Walter passed away in December 2014 but his work continues.  Vale Walter Leijten.
